What is a Second Level Domain Name (2LD)? Print

  • 4

A second level domain name (2LD) is a shorter domain name (e.g 'abc123.my') as compared to a third level domain name (3LD) (e.g. 'abc123.com.my'; 'abc123.org.my'). 2LD registrations were done in the early years of domain name registrations. However the trend towards categorizing domain names according to activities and nature of business created the demand for 3LDs like org.my; net.my; gov.my; edu.my. The increasing popularity and demand for the 3LDs led to the closure of 2LD registrations. With other nation's beginning to offer 2LDs, .my Domain Registry will now be reintroducing the .my country level 2LDs.
